Why Convert BMP to JPG?

BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed format that stores every pixel individually, producing enormous file sizes. A BMP photo can easily be 5–20× larger than its JPG equivalent with little to no visible difference. Converting to JPG makes files practical to share via email, upload to websites, or store without wasting disk space. JPG is also universally supported by every device, app, and service.

Choosing the Right Quality

At 85% quality the JPG is virtually indistinguishable from the BMP original while being a fraction of the size. Drop to 70–80% for social media or messaging where the smallest file size matters. Use 90–95% only when you need near-lossless output for print or archival purposes.

Where BMP Files Come From

BMP files are most commonly produced by older Windows software. Microsoft Paint saves images as BMP by default in many Windows versions. Screen capture tools in older Windows systems, legacy industrial and medical imaging equipment, and some older CAD applications all output BMP. BMP is essentially raw pixel data with a header — it was practical when storage and processing power were limited, but today there is no reason to keep files in BMP format. Converting to JPG or PNG is always the right move for sharing or archiving.

BMP to JPG vs BMP to PNG

Both JPG and PNG give you a smaller, more portable file than BMP. Choose JPG when the image is photographic and file size is the priority — JPG can be 10–20× smaller than BMP with negligible visible quality loss. Choose PNG when the image contains sharp edges, text, diagrams or flat colours, or when you need pixel-perfect lossless quality. PNG is also the better choice if you want the option to convert to WebP later for web delivery.
