Fractions and Decimals Explained

A fraction represents a part of a whole, written as a numerator over a denominator (e.g. ¾). To convert to a decimal, simply divide the numerator by the denominator. For mixed numbers (e.g. 2¾), add the whole number to the fractional part. Converting back from decimal to fraction requires finding the fraction with the smallest denominator that equals the decimal — a process called simplification using the greatest common divisor (GCD).

Repeating Decimals and Precision Limits

Repeating decimals (like 0.333… for ⅓) are shown to 10 decimal places. The decimal-to-fraction converter uses up to 10 decimal places of precision; for repeating decimals like 0.3333 it will return a close approximation such as 3333/10000 rather than the exact ⅓. For exact results with repeating decimals, enter the fraction directly (1/3) rather than converting from the decimal approximation.
