Why Convert GIF to JPG?
GIF images are limited to 256 colours and were designed for simple graphics and animations. When you need a still photo from a GIF — for a profile picture, email attachment, or social media post — JPG is the ideal target format. JPG supports millions of colours, is universally accepted by every app and platform, and produces much smaller file sizes for photographic content.
JPG Quality Guide
| Use Case | Recommended Quality | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging / social | 70–80% | Very small, good quality |
| Web publishing | 80–85% | Small, sharp detail |
| Print / archival | 90–95% | Larger, near-lossless |
| Email attachment | 75–85% | Good balance |
About GIF Transparency
GIF supports single-colour transparency (pixels are either fully transparent or fully opaque). JPG cannot store any transparency, so transparent pixels must be replaced with a solid colour before saving. The default background is white, which is correct for most images. If your GIF has a transparent background intended for a dark-coloured page, switch the background colour accordingly to avoid a white halo around the subject.
GIF to JPG vs GIF to PNG — Which Should You Choose?
Choose JPG when the image is photographic or contains many colours and you need the smallest possible file size for sharing or uploading. JPG's lossy compression excels with photos. Choose PNG when the image has sharp edges, flat colour areas, text or a logo — PNG's lossless compression preserves hard edges perfectly. PNG also supports full alpha transparency, while JPG does not. For a GIF cartoon or icon, PNG is almost always the better target; for a GIF screenshot of a photo or video frame, JPG gives a smaller file.
