What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 and later. It uses HEVC compression to store photos at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG while maintaining the same visual quality. Apple adopted HEIC to save storage on devices — a 4K photo that would be 5 MB as a JPG is typically 2–2.5 MB as a HEIC file.
The problem is that HEIC is not natively supported by Windows, most Android devices, or the majority of web services — making sharing, uploading and editing difficult without first converting to a universal format.
HEIC vs JPG Comparison
| Property | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | HEVC (very efficient) | DCT (widely supported) |
| File size | ~50% smaller than JPG | Baseline |
| Platform support | Apple only (natively) | Universal |
| Web / email | Often rejected | Universally accepted |
| HDR / depth data | Supported | Not supported |
| Editing software | Limited support | Supported everywhere |
When Should You Convert HEIC to JPG?
- Sending to Windows users — Windows 10 and 11 require a paid codec to open HEIC files natively. Convert first to avoid the recipient seeing a blank image.
- Uploading to websites and forms — Most platforms (Facebook, Instagram, job application portals, government forms) reject HEIC uploads.
- Using in design software — Canva, Google Slides, many older versions of Photoshop and Illustrator do not support HEIC.
- Sharing via email — Email clients on non-Apple devices often can't display HEIC inline.
- Printing services — Photo labs and printing services universally accept JPG; HEIC support is rare.
- Archiving for long-term access — JPG is a 30-year-old format with guaranteed future compatibility. HEIC is newer and less certain.

Why 90% Quality for iPhone Photos?
HEIC photos are already compressed by the iPhone camera. Converting at 75–85% re-compresses an already-compressed image, which can introduce subtle artefacts on fine texture (hair, fabric, foliage). Using 90% quality preserves the iPhone's original detail while still producing a JPG that is 3–5× smaller than the original HEIC. For photos you intend to print or edit, use 95–100%.
